Kirk and Renee like to keep things simple.
They’ve raised their family in just 1200 SF, but had been dreaming of a place to entertain and gather with friends and (more) family.
The existing galley kitchen was cut off from everything. Kirk, a contractor, started designing an extension. The house had an L-shaped back corner, and filling it in seemed like an obvious win.
There were all kinds of questions — Could we do a flat roof? Should we repurpose the existing cabinets? How will we save the oak tree? We worked through our process: measure the house (twice, of course), brainstorm, come up with three good options.
We knew that adding volume to the dining room would be an effective way to make the entire space feel loftier and larger, without adding actual square footage in this area. Our plan also allowed us to work with the roof transition, without having to mess with ceilings in the other rooms. The space now opens up to the beautiful large backyard and mature oak trees, creating an awesome indoor/outdoor connection.
We then created a new interior space plan for the kitchen, dining room, and laundry area. The laundry is tucked away behind the kitchen and dining area, up against the bedrooms, and doubles as a pantry space with an opening into the dining room.
The result? A mere 200 square foot addition, oh so magically, gave Kirk and Renee all the space they needed.
